I haven't posted for a while because I am still waiting to get the internet in my flat, but that should be this week so I will be blogging more regularly.

Anyway, while I'm at work I thought I'd make a quick post.

I'm not usually one for commenting on fashion, it certainly is not my area of expertise but more men out there should be wearing suits like these...

Louisa (polaroid test)

This was shot on Sunday, four days before Louisa starts 'big school'. A scary time for all kids! So I'm going to be shooting a lot more from now on, (thinking about combining several photographic mediums??) and I'm hoping to photograph Louisa throughout her first year at her new school alongside a diary she is writing which will hopefully all be made into a lovely little book at the end. I'm not going to explain again what this project is all about (you can just look at my older posts) but once I have shot some more I will most likely go into a little more detail, so watch this space!

The Decked Project

I have been a bit lazy with this blog lately but am going to start posting again!

This time last week was the private view of the exhibition I was part of, The Decked Project at the Stolen Space gallery on Brick Lane. Loads of people turned up and it was such an awesome night! Here are are a couple of pics of my board (not great quality as they were taken on my phone) but I will post some pics up of all the boards soon!

Part of my Louisa series, posted some contacts of these a few days ago. They were printed in the darkroom and it took me hours to get the colours right. I am a perfectionist. Unfortunately the scans of these prints don't do much justice but you get the general idea. If you want to know what this work is about read through some of my old posts it's pretty much all there.

Polaroid Emulsion Lifts & Transfers

Over the past few months I've been experimenting with some alternative processes, polaroid emulsion lifts and transfers. It took me a while to find the write paper to transfer on but I'm pretty happy with some of the results.

The emulsion lifts are probably the most tricky out of the two (and the ones I've posted on here are just tests) but they can go on any surface which is great. I am doing emulsion lifts on a skate deck for an exhibition in August www.thedeckedproject.blogspot.com just hoping my idea will look as good as it does in my head!

I'm not sure if I prefer transfers, but they are definitely more fun to make, fumbling about in the dark.

Partly inspired my Hellen Van Meene (I just can't get enough of her work) this contact sheet is part of the same piece of work. Although focusing more on her body language and androgynous clothing accentuating the fact Louisa is still a child, but entering a transitional period which we often ignore.

So for a while now I have been interested in how young girls are affected by advertising and the media but after a lot of research and a lot of shoots I've become less interested in the media's effect and more interested in the girls themselves. Photographers like Lauren Greenfield and Hellen Van Meene have photographed teenage girls in the transitional stage from a teenager to a woman. I am more interested in preadolescence, an age that is often overlooked yet is tremendously important in terms of developing an identity.

So, it's Summer and I really really want to get a bike, trouble is I'm terrible at making decisions and have seen loads I like the look of/would want my own bike to look like if I (or actually someone else) were to build it.

This work is partly inspired by 'Mirror' by Sylvia Plath and by psychologist, Jacques Lacan's ideas behind the 'Mirror Stage'. I often look outside of photography for inspiration to find new ideas instead of regurgitating what has already been done (without sounding pretentious). I am also interested in the idea that we can never really see our 'true' self. We always perform when we see our reflection, even if it is just making the tiniest adjustment. I have also made a video to accompany this but need to work on editing it.Click on image to see full view as the end has been cut off due to the layout of the page.

Mirror

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful-
The eye of the little god, four cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is a part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Now I am a lake. A woman bends over me,
Searching my reaches for what she really is.
Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon.
I see her back, and reflect it faithfully.
She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands.
I am important to her. She comes and goes.
Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness.
In me she has drowned a young girl, and in me an old woman
Rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.

I love everything about polaroids. I love the mistakes, the way they feel, how small they are. Just everything about them, not to mention of course that they are instant. After using 600 for so long I've recently been using Fuji fp 100c which is cheaper and much better quality. I take pleasure in te beauty of the small things in life and polaroid film just seems to do this so well.
I will upload some more later, I haven't even scanned a fraction of what I have.

Tracing Memories

This set of images is part of an old series of work 'Tracing Memories'. Childhood memories were triggered through looking at old family snapshots. Memories that I was so sure had happened. After doing a little research I discovered that these memories and never taken place, which made me question the reliability of a photograph as well as my own memory. Why do certain photographs trigger certain memories and feelings within ourselves? Why do we feel we can rely on the family album so much to trigger our memory? These images do not try to answer these questions but instead explore the way I felt after realising that they did not happen.

Since I have been interested in photography I have used film. It has only seemed sensible to use digital when I could not use film, for weddings, which I shall never do again, and for a couple of location fashion shoots. When it comes to my own work I always use film. It has a beautiful quality that a digital image will never be able to possess. I am in no way ignorant of digital but using film, whether it be 5x4 or polaroid, has always just felt so natural to me. I always prefer to use my bronica, without it I am lost.
